Earthquake felt in Lawrence KS Saturday morning September 3rd, 2016 for about a minute from 7:05am to 7:06am. Woke my wife and I up (we were up until just after 1am) when we heard the sliding glass windows in our master bedroom loft start vibrating. We had felt one a few years back that was maybe 10 to 15 seconds and not as strong.
I filled out a survey that we felt one on the Earthquake website and based on my answers it said it was a level II earthquake. That probably doesn’t even qualify as an earthquake for other people in the country like those in California and Oklahoma that experience much higher levels but it got our attention out of a sound sleep.
No damage, no pictures on shelves moved, etc. Initially I thought it was the ceiling fan starting to go out of balance and after shutting it off and still feeling and hearing the vibrations, knew it was an earthquake. Just then a FaceBook post from our friend Laura Maddux Green came through stating she had just felt her first earthquake.
Laura later reported at 7:31am that it had been a 5.8 in NE Oklahoma and that there have been 19 in the past week in that area. Thanks Laura! Have you considered a career in weather reporting? You were extremely fast at getting that word out to all of us!
Off to work to show houses this busy 3 day weekend when people are off work and thankful I don’t have to fix or replace our master bedroom ceiling fan and that we experienced no damage here in Lawrence KS.
